New Year's Weekend at Dinosaur Valley State Park

For the new year this year I didn't feel like going out but I didn't feel like being an old lady and staying home either.  Lucky for me I remembered my bucket list and decided to cross off a couple of things.  That's right, this New Year I crossed off two bucket list items:  Seeing Dinosaur Valley State Park's dinosaur tracks and doing a polar plunge!  This post is about the dinosaur tracks and I will write a few more about the entire weekend.

I headed out on my first solo roadtrip and camping experience to Dinosaur Valley State Park (DVSP).  I knew I wanted to do a bucket list item but which one?  I started searching online and somehow came across a first day hike posting for a majority of hte Texas State Parks.  Two of my bucket list parks (within a weekend driving distance) were having a first day hike:  Dino Valley and Colorado Bend State Park.  I almost chose Colorado Bend State Park so I can see Gorman Falls, but I figured they would be better in the spring time plus DVSP was having a dino dive (polar plunge)!

All of DVSP's campsites were sold out so I needed to find alternate accommodations.  I thought about staying at a B&B but it was just me and $150 a night was not in my last minute budget.  Camping it is!  I found an RV site that allowed for tent camping at $20/night with electricity and a bathroom.  Score!  I set up my (newly purchased) tent and only needed three random people to help me put it together.
I spy flamingos!
That night was New Year's Eve and I thought there might be some fun things to do in town, like a bar or something.  NOPE! Apparently (according to my friend Savannah), pasture parties (it is just like it sounds) are the rage in town but everyone else stays home with the bars/restaurants closing early.  In one of the building on the property they were having a Bluegrass concert/event that sounded fun.  And when I said sounded fun, I meant that there wasn't anything else to do except look at my shoes so I went so I would not be bored.

I thought it would have tons of people but it was a bunch of older people sitting in a circle playing instruments and singing.  No dancing, hardly any chit chat.  I decided to make friends though and a lady even taught me how to play spoons! It turned out to be a fun night.  The group travels all over the country in their RV's and meet up a few times a month in various places.  Pretty cool
I didn't catch her name but this lady was so nice to teach me to play!

The First Day Hike

First day hikes are a nationwide event where everyone meets at a designated spot on the campgrounds to do a group hike.  The purpose is to get out and move on the first of the year and (hopefully) continue to be outdoors doing lots of activities the rest of the year.

Everyone met at fossil site #3 at 10 AM and we split off in a short hike and a long hike.  I wanted to do the long hike but Clarissa was due to be there soon so I went with what I thought was the short one, but it turned out to be the long hike.  I was talking and wasn't paying attention. :/  Oops!

We had to wade in the river (shoes off) to get to the hike and I got to see my first set of dinosaur tracks!  The big holes are dinosaur tracks of a huge oval shaped foot and you can also see a three toed foot too.  (more pictures here-PW is flamingo)

We passed by the area where the short hike was going and then I turned around.  There was another girl in my group that came back with me and hung out with me until her friend was done hiking.

We waited for about 15 minutes before Clarissa got there!  See part two tomorrow!!

Roatan, Honduras Take 3

On December 30th I flew to Roatan, Honduras for the New Year’s weekend. I had never been out of the country on a holiday before so I was excited to see how other countries celebrate.  (technically I was in Venezuela over the 4th of July but they do not celebrate the US’s holiday over there so I wasn’t going to count that).

You walk on the tarmac at this airport!
My Aunt Tracy and Aunt Laura both greeted me at the airport with a Monkey La La at the airport bar.  We went straight to the West End section of the island to pick up my uncles and my cousin.  We just hung out the rest of the day and evening.  It is sooooo relaxing there!

The next day my uncle took me snorkeling.  I FREAK OUT snorkeling in Roatan because the water is so clear that you think fish are 4 feet away but they can really be 15+ feet away.  BUT, you don’t realize that in your head and you freak out. At least that’s what I do.  My aunt’s house has a long dock on it that has great snorkeling around it but you have to swim through turtle grass to get to it.  I know it’s irrational but it freaks me out.

We also took the boat out one day
Anyway, to fix my fear he made me hold on to a pink water noodle and he stayed with me the entire time.  I did freak out a little but not as much as I did the last time when I almost killed my aunt while snorkeling with her.  Needless to say, my entire family doesn’t go anywhere near me while snorkeling so it was quite a pleasant surprise when my uncle helped me. :)  My Uncle Roger always took care of us when we were little though so I shouldn’t have been surprised.   Thanks Uncle Rog!

That night we went to a restaurant in the West End called the Blue Marlin for their New Year’s Eve celebration.  I haven’t had so much fun on NYE before.  I am forever spoiled by Roatan.  The Blue Marlin had a steak and lobster dinner with champagne, fireworks and dancing…all for $40!  I usually spend between $100-$200 on NYE (depending on what I am doing) so $40 is awesome.  The food was awesome, the fireworks were bright, and the dancing was fun!  I can’t even begin to explain how awesome it was.  When I got sick of dancing (I only like to dance to songs I know) I would sit by the water and just listen to the waves crashing.  So peaceful on one hand but exciting from the music behind me.

I spent a lot of time reading in these hammocks!
The next day my aunt had invited several of her friends from the island over for lunch.  I was on my tablet when I saw a message on Facebook from my sister.  I couldn’t open it for some reason so I figured I would just wait until I could turn my phone’s wi-fi on.  I figured it was just a note asking if I was having fun.  A few hours later I was able to turn it on and saw that she had sent me a note saying that my dad had been having chest pains and was about to go in for surgery.  He had had a heart attack several years ago so this wasn’t the first time.  In the days leading up to it he had what he though was heart burn but since it continued for 3 days straight, they decided to go to the hospital.  It turns out that one of his stints had come loose and he needed it repaired.

I was a crying/sobbing mess that I couldn’t get anyone on the phone and I couldn’t get there.  There is one flight back to Houston a day and it left at 2 pm.  I didn’t have time to make it to the airport on time, even if there had been space.  I was able to get ahold of my sister and then my step-mom and they assured me that he was fine.  They had asked the doctor if they needed me to fly back right away but the doctor said he was ok and would be fine to wait until I got home.  I talked to him that afternoon and felt much better about being so far away.  It is so hard being that far away and pretty much helpless because you can’t catch a flight back.  People were starting to get to the house for lunch so I went upstairs after I talked to him to regroup.  Both my aunt and uncle came up to check on me and see how I was doing.  They’re awesome.

After a while I felt ok enough to go downstairs and be with people.  Sometimes you just need a few minutes by yourself after you get bad news.  We all ate lunch (including cabbage for money and peas for good luck) and then played games well into the night.  I brought the Bean Boozled game from Jelly Belly with me and it was a huge hit!  We all took turns spinning the wheel and eating good or bad jelly beans.  Some of the were really bad! :)  We all also played Cards Against Humanity which is hilarious!  I had played a few times before but I especially got into it for this game.

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing on the beach or dock.  My aunt took me and her friend Jackie to this abandoned resort on the east side of the island.  It is still kept up really nice but no one goes there anymore.  There are guards at the front gate but if you ask nicely they will let you take a peak.  We stayed at the dock for about an hour just talking.

My Uncle Roger and Aunt Laura left Sunday afternoon and we left Monday afternoon.  I did get a chance to take a picture of this little fish that we think was protecting its eggs.  All of the snorkelers on the dock were complaining this little grey fish was biting them when they were getting on/off the ladder.  On the other side of the platform I saw a post that had a hole in it (that really needs repairing btw) and a little grey fish just swimming by it and chasing all of the other fish away.  I asked and they think it probably had laid its eggs in there and that’s why it was being so protective.  I couldn’t really get a good picture, but you can still sort of see.

New Year's Eve 2013

I hope you all have had a wonderful start to 2014!  My New Year’s Eve was super fun this year.  My original plan was to travel to Dallas like last year and we would all go out again, but in mid-December I decided that I didn’t want to travel to Dallas and wasn’t up for partying too much.  I have never been one to drink a ton and babysitting a bunch of drunk people til 3 am just wasn’t something I have the energy for these days.  Last year was really fun, but I just wasn’t up for it this year.  I was really sad that I wouldn’t see my Dallas friends, but hopefully they will come to Nacogdoches for the DrivingJacks 5K in April!

So what did I end up doing for New Year’s Eve?  I went to a Rockets game and then we had a private party at the stadium for about 500 of us.  My church, Houston’s First, has a HUGE single’s department and each year they host a New Year’s Eve party at a different venue.  Last year the party was some sort of hoe-down, but that isn’t my thing (plus I went to Dallas).  There isn’t drinking at the party, which was 100% fine with me!  It is so much easier to have fun without worrying about DD’s and making sure your friends don’t get arrested or go home with someone they shouldn’t. LOL.

I got off work at 3 pm and headed straight to Starbucks.  I knew that I wouldn’t be able to stay awake by myself without some sort of caffeine in me, so I got a venti pumpkin spice with an extra shot.  I am a person who goes to bed early (by 10 pm) everyone night and anything past mid-night better be a REALLY special occasion. :)  I also had volunteered at a New Year’s Day 5K and had to be there at 6 am and I knew that Starbucks wouldn’t be open then, so I got another iced latte without the ice.  Trick/life hack:  Get the ice latte without the ice, stick it in the fridge, add ice whenever you are ready to drink it so it won’t have a watered down taste!

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to wear to the party; I had a few ideas but when I went to try them on, they didn’t fit or didn’t look right.  I am determined to lose the weight I gained back since finishing marathon training.  I ended up wearing the dress I wore to Chelsea and Matt’s wedding last year with a sweater and heels.  Several people were carpooling to the event, so we all met up at the church at 5pm.  We got to the Rocket’s game right at 5:45 pm and got our tickets and wrist bands.  I had never been to a professional basketball game before (or even college game I don’t think), but I have always wanted to.  You know what that means? BUCKET LIST ITEM!!!  :)

We sat down in our seats and watched the game.  At first I wasn’t into the game, but then as time went on I started to enjoy myself.  Let me tell you, Rockets games are much more entertaining than Astros games.  I love the Astros (or any Houston team), but OMG they are boring to watch.  Plus, in baseball they really don’t have a close up monitor.  In basketball you can see their faces  and stare at the hotties.  ;)  Just sayin’.  They also had great entertainment throughout the game, I especially liked the senior dance skit and the basketball players that did somersaults on trampolines!

After the game they moved us downstairs to the court for two people to talk to us.  One of them was the chaplain for the Rockets, and the other was a pro basketball player talking about his testimony.  I was upstairs helping set up for the event (it’s the event planner in me) so I only partly heard his story.  After I was done setting up the tables, I went downstairs just in time to get to shoot a free-throw on the court!  I did my best impression of a NBA player, but alas I did not make the shot.  My much hoped for career of being a pro basketball player did not work out. :/  Any scouts in the audience were disappointed I am sure.

After we were all done shooting free throws, we all went back upstairs to the Sky Court area to play game and get our party on.  They had karaoke set up and guess what song we sang?  New Kids on the Block’s “You got the Right Stuff”.  We thought it would be super fun, but it turns out that it wasn’t a song we remembered very much so it sort of blew. LOL.  Next time I am totally singing Call me Maybe!

There were a ton of other games like basketball (obviously).

Ski-Ball

Light up game (you hit the lights when they came on to test your reaction time)

Free Throws

Wii (which I of course did not play)

Then, you could put your feet in a model of pro basketball player’s feet.  These guys shoe size are huge!

There was also a dance floor where we all met to countdown the night.  So fun!  We did some YMCA, Cupid’s Shuffle, and more.  They also had a late night breakfast of eggs, pancakes and sausage for us plus tons of sodas and juice.  The tables I had set up earlier had mints, party hats, blowers, horns and games to play.

The party was over at 1 am, but the group I ended up riding with left around 12:45.  I got hope around 1:30 am and kissed a very cute cat Happy New Years and promptly went to bed.  I had to get up at 5 am to volunteer the next day.

2013 in Review

2013 was an interesting year to say the least. There were some ups and downs during the year, but I learned a lot about myself and where I want to go in life. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan for me in my life. I know that I cannot always control what happens to me, but God is in control and he sees the big picture around the corner that I cannot see. I was able to travel twice, both times to places I have never been to before and both times by myself without knowing anyone. One of my goals in 2013 was to complete 5 bucket list items, but I completed 8 of them! Woo Hoo!!!!

I am hoping to complete at least 5 more in 2014; which ones should it be?

NYE 2012

Happy New Year Peeps!

I travelled to Dallas for New Year's Eve this year and I had a blast!  A few years ago I went to Dallas with Amber and Clarissa for NYE and we went bar hopping, but this year I wanted to do something fun with cocktail dresses!!!  Clarissa and I googled Dallas NYE parties and we found the FashionUnCorked party put on by the Fashion Industry Gallery,  The tickets were between $100-$125 plus the cost of a table if you wanted one ($175).  Let me tell you, the party was awesome!!  I was worried about there being a lot of older couples there, but I would say about 99.5% was people 35 and younger.  So much fun.  All you could drink premium alcoholic beverages were provided, there was a dance floor, and pictures.  It was great.

We all got dressed at Clarissa's house for the night.  We also started the evening with some champagne and other cocktails to pre-party.

Look at my fabulous shoes!!!  4" heels will be the death of me.  My feet hurt so bad by the end of the night, but they were awesome.  I was honestly terrified that I would fall down and hurt my ankle or leg and not be able to run my marathon in two weeks.  I decided not to live in fear though and rocked them all night.  Love them!

Clarissa's roommate Laura had her Dad be our designated driver so he dropped us off right in front of the building and then came back later to pick us up.  You walk in on a red carpet all fancy movie star like.  So fun.  We had some finger foods and got our drinks.  It was all you could drink premium liquor and mixers so pretty much any drink you could think up, was yours.  I haven't been drinking too much lately so I had two or three drinks the entire night (Tequilla Sunrise) then stuck to Flamingo Sunrise the rest of the night.

Me and Chelsea!  Chelsea was the beautiful bride that I went to see in November.

This is my new friend and Clarissa's friend Laura!

Roommates!

Amber and Lara

By the end of the night all of our feet hurt and we were ready for bed.  We had danced our booty's off and chatted up with some cute guys. We got home around 3 am and slept until the next morning around 11 am.  Well, they did, I was up at 9 am wishing that they would wake up because I was bored. LOL.  We had planned on going to Cracker Barrel, but that place was freakishly busy so we went to Olive Garden for hangover food instead.  I left Dallas around 3 pm and got home around 8 pm.  Jabba was happy to see me for sure!

So, again, I say to you:  Happy New Year!!!  May 2013 bring you luck, prospertiy, and love. :)
