How I Choose Which Sports Team To Root For

So, the Super Bowl is today...who are you going to root for?  I put $10 in a Super Bowl square pot so that is the only reason I will be watching (and maybe for the commercials).  It is in Houston this year, which I am excited about.  I tried and tried and tried to find someone who wants to bring me as their distinguished guest, but no takers.  Tickets are really expensive and I am saving for a house, so I decided to be an adult about things and not pay $4K for a ticket.  #adulting

Back on subject:  I have always had a plan on how I choose who I am rooting for in any type of sport team situation.  I have outlined it below for anyone who needs help choosing a team.  You're welcome. LOL.

Family-This RARELY happens (as in never) but I do want to leave it out just in case my family ever plays a pro sport. For now, the teams that fall in this category are all considered Little League teams, but it could happen one day.  I could marry a pro-ball player. :)  That means you, JJ WATT.

SFASU Teams-I won't bet against SFA teams.  Sorry, it won't happen even if I know we are going to lose (i.e. football).  Exception: if for some crazy reason my nephews or my niece decide to go to rival college, I will still root for SFA but I will wear a pin or something to signify that I am rooting for that one person.  I am not willing to do this for another family member. #truestory

Houston Teams-As a person who has lived in the Houston area for the majority of my life (besides 2 years in Philadelphia and 3 years in Nacogdoches), I will always root for any Houston team. H-Town is in my blood. I don't care if I move far away, Texas will be my team.

Texas Teams-I love me some Texas.  Everything is bigger in Texas and that includes our sports teams.  I have to support my Tejas.

Southern Teams-We just seem to breathe a different air down here.  IDK.  They are just closer to home.

USA-Because, USA!  USA!  USA!

And if there are no other teams that fit any of the criteria above, I will go with:

Best Colors of Uniforms-I am partial to purple and pink but those are rare in sports teams.  I choose based on the best color combinations

So...which team am I rooting on for the 2017 Superbowl? The Atlanta Falcons because they fit in the "southern" category.  Honestly, I don't care who wins but I have to pick one of them.   I might be a rebel and wear a Texans shirt though.

The Texas Madness Massacre

Yesterday SFASU Men’s Basketball competed in the NCAA tournament against Utah.  Like last year, the alumni of SFA had watch parties all over Texas (and even one in Virginia) so that we could all watch the game together.  I deleted my FB profile a while ago and I had not seen the men’s basketball updates like I usually did through my newsfeed. After a quick google search that said they had made it into the tournament, I called the Alumni Association office to see if they were hosting watch parties like they had last year.  They were having them in several Houston areas locations and asked if I could host one at Lucky’s Pub.  I wouldn’t have to do anything except put out some SFA Alumni materials that they shipped to me.

I made it to the game (and got a GREAT parking spot) at around 6 pm.  The kickoff was originally supposed to be around 6:30, but it got moved back to just after 7 pm.  I put out the free koozies, pens, pins, and hyper-color cups for everyone to take.  I think we had about 300 people there. 

I met up with some Driving Jacks members and we all sat together.  I looked up and I saw Hector coming over to where we were sitting.  I didn’t even know he was in town (he’s been in California for work the past 1.5 months)!  We all sat together and watched the game.  

Some of us really got into it……LOL.

The game was fun to watch, but the end was sad.  SFA lost to Utah 50-57.  They played a good game and I am happy that they made it far!  They had a wonderful season and played their best. 

As for Texas…all five teams that made it to the tournament were kicked out last night. Baylor, SMU, Texas, Texas Southern and Stephen F. Austin logged a combined 0-5 record.   Whomp, whomp, whomp.  It was like the Texas MadnessMassacre (I saw that on an article comment and though it was funny, hence the name of this post).  Two of the teams were favored to advance, but they were beaten too (Baylor and SMU).

Now I will go back to not caring about basketball.  Or Football.  Or baseball.  Well, baseball will be on my mind when this little guy starts playing.  He joined a “K-Ball” team and has started practicing.  His first game was supposed to be Saturday, but it got cancelled due to rain.  K-Ball is a precursor to T-Ball, which is a precursor to baseball.

Houston Dash Game

Last night I was able to attend my first ever professional soccer game. I got 5 free tickets from work and I took my friend Angie and her kids with me.  It was my first time (their's too) to attend a soccer game in general and also my first time at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Houston Dash is a women's soccer league that joined the National Women's Soccer League in the 2014 season, making it Houston's newest sports team!  Honestly, I had never heard of the Dash and didn't know we had a woman's team in Houston.  I guess since it is their first season, we haven't heard too much about them.  At this game, they were playing the Seattle Reign.  We didn't know until half-time, but Hope Solo was there playing the goalie.  I had heard of her before, but since I do not follow soccer (at all), I wasn't sure what team she was on.

Anyway, we sat in the President's club section with padded seats, which was really nice. No hard plastic seats for us!  The President's club has it's own fully stocked bar and food area, but you still have to pay for the items.  I was going to get a margarita, but it was $11!  No thanks!  The seats were in the middle of the stadium and you could see the field perfectly.

I invited my friend Angie and her family to come with me.  She had said that none of her kids have ever gone to a soccer game and that her daughter had always wanted to plays soccer.  Perfect!  The game started at 8 pm and I met them at the stadium around 7:15.

Honestly, the stadium was pretty much empty!  It was worse than an Astros game!  The boys were soooo hoping that one of the girls would take off their shirts when they scored a goal.  LOL.  Apparently they had researched it beforehand and were looking forward to it (it didn't happen).  Oh, teenage boys!

During half time, we got up and walked around the stadium.  Most of the food areas were closed, but it seemed like they had at least one open on each side.  We looked around the gift shop a bit and even waited by the tunnel to see the players come out after halftime.  We saw Hope Solo!  She didn't acknowledge any fans though, even the ones who told her Happy Birthday. I guess she was focused on the game (she did sign lots of stuff after the game for fans though).

The game ended in a Houston defeat, dashing (see what I did there?) our hopes for the night.  After the game, the kids got autographs from several players and even got their picture taken with one of them.

It was fun catching up with my friend!  I'm gad she was able to come and I could see her.  I decided that soccer wasn't really my thing, but it is always fun to attend games.  I need to get a team shirt for the next time I go!
