The Secret, A Treasure Hunt

So, I’m obsessed with a treasure hunt!  In 1982 Byron Preiss published a booked called, The Secret.  No, not the Secret where you wish for a million dollars and it comes true, it’s a treasure hunting book.  He buried 12 cache’s in 12 different major cities throughout North America in 1981. Inside the cache is one ceramic key that can be turned in for a real jewel that is/was in a safety deposit box in NYC.  One was found in Chicago in 1983 and the other was found in Cleveland in 2004. Unfortunately, Byron Preiss died in 2005 and didn’t tell anyone where the jewels were.  He used to respond to treasure seekers with clues or to tell them they are on the right track, but now he’s gone and there isn’t anyone to do that.

To date, only 2 of the 12 have been found.  Some people say that you can only find the cache and not receive the jewels and others have said that his widow said you can still receive the jewels.  I guess we won’t know until someone finds the next cache!

Guess where one of the 12 is hidden?!?!?!  That’s right, Houston, TX!!!  There is one  picture and one verse that goes with each treasure.  You can’t use a metal detector because the key the cache is a ceramic box inside a plexi-glass box.  You might be able to use a ground penetrating radar, but even that may not be possible.

This is the picture that is associated with Houston.  Well, they think this is it because it has all the clues of Houston.  The book just gives you 12 verses and 12 pictures but doesn’t tell you which goes to which.  A few of the images/verse combos are controversial and they don’t know which city they are for sure in.  Most of the pictures have latitude/longitude coordinates, but a few don’t.

A couple great resources:  PBWorks Wiki and Quest4Treasure Forum (HUGE backlog of info dating way back)

This is the verse associated with Houston:
Fortress north
Cold as glass
Friendship south
Take your task
To the number
Nine eight two
Through the wood
No lion fears
In the sky the water veers
Small of scale
Step across
Perspective should not be lost
In the center of four alike
Small, split,
Three winged and slight
What we take to be
Our strongest tower of delight
Falls gently
In December night
Looking back from treasure ground
There's the spout!
A whistle sounds.

I have used this forum and this Wiki to help point towards clues!!  The people that post are really good and most have been working on the puzzle for years.  Good luck to whoever goes looking for it!  I am also interested in the New Orleans one since that is within a short driving distance too.

  1. Best of luck! I spent 2017 working on the Charleston casque. Here's what I came up with: https://jamesvachowski.com/2017/12/31/the-buried-treasure-of-sullivans-island/

  2. Hi, I just received permission to dig casque #3. There is a slight chance the date could change, but as of this writing it is for Thursday, August 2, 2018. I'm so excited because it is in a place where nobody has looked before. Look at my youtube channel under the name ZenaBumblebee. Fingers crossed!

  3. Not sure Verse 1 fits with Houston after all. Consider Image 1 as actually an image of the Columbia Gorge in Oregon and Multnomah Falls with the railroad below. The Vista House built on the ridge above and the significance of Simon Benson (immigrant from Norway).

Propose that the 12 images are major Tarot cards and image 1 is the mother goddess (wisdom) reversed= secret. Longitude ~122 and latitude suggested by where her fingers point once image is reversed in 45 (Gorge).

Propose that the "Houston" image is the magician (Magi) and a different verse fits much better.

Cold as glass (Vista House in Gorge)
Friendship south (Friendship compass= down into gorge)
    Take your task
    To the number
Nine eight two (Multnomah falls famous photo log 982)

No lion fears (sea lions in the Gorge)
In the sky the water veers (numerous falls along route)
    Small of scale
Step across (Benson Bridge crossing Falls)
    Perspective should not be lost
In the center of four alike
    Small, split,
Three winged and slight (NOT SURE, but key to location)
    What we take to be
Our strongest tower of delight (Melville= PEACE)
    Falls gently
In December night (Multnomah falls freezes in winter)
Looking back from treasure ground (north of Mult falls?)

  5. Does anyone know for sure how Mr. Preiss intended his audience to match the verse with the correct painting? I suggest that it was as simple as taking things mentioned in a verse, and finding a picture with that item in it. I would also suggest that there may be more than one of these "connectors" to enable the reader to make this important connection. No where in all of these "The Secret" sites have I seen a spreadsheet or the like that does this.

    1. treasure ground has to be in the zoo's reflecting pond area ("small in scale" to larger reflecting pond in Hermann park, includes 3 set of steps, many columns, 4 water fountains, etc) with oak trees next to the reptile building. see arched brick entry to reptile building (not train tracks). bottom rt of entry, cobra on stone stand (snake is the Jinn)/look closely at right side of water in painting to see snake in black, head on top; behind snake is (spout) coming off chrome pipe which resembles a train's whistle. key to finding dig spot is 'finding painting's perspective (opposite of 'perspective should not be lost'. "three-winged and slight" could be reptile building wings, three of them and slight is outdoor viewing on right side of building

  6. Arabia/Persia (Islam) considers 'ruby' special, 'Jinn' as real as humans (when not invisible or hiding, take on forms of other things, most often snakes. Jinn and 'hidden' are synonymous. way too many images in 1970s aerial view of zoo, fist & finger pointing (like one seen on signs, cursor) in Jinn's scarf, same finger pointing in shadow at base of water (in larger size) is the aerial image of the sidewalk area on left center of park. Those saying moon foot print in upper right of trees is really just a part of the aerial view of northeast side of park where the road splits/ what looks like a pointed boot print in trees next to 'moon foot print is the same aerial view of this road splitting of of park perimeter. This aerial view also shows acorn shaped park (tiny acorn in ruby). Ruby shape perimeter of the park has three wings: two - east and west and one - south end of park...look at perimeter street. ...could be three-winged and slight (small).

  7. reptile building is a rectangle, flat roof line with arched entry. see zipper looking part of painting and turn painting 90 degrees to see the building and the curved entry. bottom right of arched entry aligns with cobra snake and the image water/Jinn.
Now, my take on location and explanation of why camel column has not shadow... Column sits behind the wheelchair ramp on north end of reflecting pond; has metal hand rail (both shown at base of column in painting) *the key to this column is it is part of the outside of the wall of the brown building that separates the sea lion area from the reflecting pond area.
email me at chiefgilchrist@gmail.com if you would like to discuss more... I read zoo is rebuilding reptile building 2020 thru 2022. Hope new water lines from park entry to reptile bldg do not ruin the chance to locate the treasure. Son starts at Rice in a few weeks and plans on scouting for more clues if he gets any free time. We're anxious to help anyone find the key before it's lost to construction.
